Yes We Code 2022 Summer Camp Recap
We had an amazing time welcoming and teaching over 20 students during the 2022 Yes We Code Summer Camp!
Over the course of two weeks, campers participated in coding lessons, robotics workshops and more! Campers learned over 4 unique coding languages, created their own digital projects and built Arduino robots. Starting with a base in block-coding using Scratch, the students then moved onto HTML and CSS using Glitch in order to build their very own websites! Each camper created beautiful websites about their favourite hero’s and presented it to their parents and members of the community. A spotlight of their work will be coming soon to the Yes We Code website.
We also had the amazing opportunity to bring all the campers to a full afternoon of fun and learning at the TELUS Spark Science Centre. There they had hands-on coding experiences using VR and interacting with robot-dogs!
To wrap up the campers’ experience, we held a career panel as well as a robotics workshop from EZ-Robots on the last day of the camp.
Our career panel hosted 5 amazing panelists from both local Calgary-based initiatives such as Charles Buchanan, the CEO and founder of Technology Helps, and Christie Rodrigues from Launchpad at Vog, as well as abroad, such as Pierre Trepanier, a recent employee of Nintendo, and Chao Cheng a recently retired IT professional.
Finally the students were provided an exciting presentation from the EZ-Robots team. This additional opportunity to work with robotics exemplified the diversity of robotics. They were able to successfully make their robots follow their commands and further develop their understanding of software and hardware.
While we’re incredibly proud of all the participants for working incredibly hard at learning this new material, we are also very proud and grateful to the community that allowed this to happen. With the support of the Calgary Foundation and the Government of Canada, we were able to provide a space for member’s of our community to connect and engage with one another on a daily basis. Additionally, we were able to support and improve the digital literacy of not only the participants, but also of their family members. We want to thank all of our amazing volunteers, partners and team members for collaborating on such an impactful project. We look forward to putting together even stronger programs in the future and cannot wait to see you there!
