In Canada, many people face challenges in learning digital skills, especially those from marginalized groups like women, racial minorities, and people with lower incomes. Research shows that almost half of Canadians who want to learn digital skills don’t know where to start. Many also face money problems, especially those with lower incomes. This makes it hard for them to improve their digital skills. These challenges, along with stereotypes and biases, stop people from marginalized groups from choosing careers in technology. This limits their job options and opportunities.
The need is even more urgent for kids as technology is part of their lives. But not all kids have the same chances to learn about computers. Access to a computer science education early helps kids learn the basics of computers. This can help them improve in school, open many doors and help them find good jobs that pay well and are in high demand.
But not all kids have the same chances to learn about computers.
At Hakili Community for Sustainable Development, we’re changing lives through computer science education. Our flagship program, YesWeCode, is making a difference for families in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and beyond. Last year, we provided 40 hours of instruction to 75 children, who spent over 3000 hours coding.
We believe every child deserves the chance to learn essential skills like coding. Learning about computers isn’t just about coding; it’s about giving kids the tools they need to succeed in today’s world.
As a black-led, volunteer-run registered Canadian charity, we’re committed to creating sustainable change that benefits current and future generations. We’re levelling the playing field through education and support, especially for communities often left behind. We aim to give everyone the tools they need to succeed, creating a fairer, brighter future for all.
In support of our initiatives, we are excited to announce Tech Futures, our upcoming gala event. All funds raised during Tech Futures will support our Computer Science Education for All—Phase 2, further developing our coding programs, scholarships, and resources for Canadian youth. Sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses and organizations that share our commitment to expanding access to coding education. Our “Computer Science for All Phase 2” campaign aims to raise $250,000 for program expansion.
